Our brains didn’t evolve to read: children don’t naturally develop the ability, like they do walking and talking. Written language is a human invention that we have to learn how to use.
Learning science has established that kids have to be taught the “secret code” of written language through explicit and systematic phonics instruction, in addition to good teaching in several other elements of literacy. Once they develop these skills, they can unlock whole worlds of learning and creativity!
Classroom instruction doesn’t always give every student what they need to become good readers, and this can cause them to resist school and struggle in other subjects.
But 1:1 tutoring with a skilled and knowledgeable instructor can help kids catch up and find joy in reading, writing, and learning—maybe for the first time.
